An Arizona man was arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with an attempted robbery at a Cadiz Street residence. A Thursday night knifing incident on Varmint Trace remains under investigation.
Located in the South Darby Street area, Anthony B. Smoka, 25, 2420 Hipa Road, Mohave Valley, Ariz., was charged with attempted first degree robbery.
Maj. R.L. Howton said that Smoka was taken into custody at abut 3:10 p.m. on Thursday. He is accused of entering Charlotte Harper’s home at 214 Cadiz St. just 24 hours earlier and demanding money at gunpoint.
Howton said that officers investigating the crime had developed information that Smoka was a suspect. After locating him on South Darby, police report clothing that fit the description of the clothing worn by Harper’s assailant was discovered in a back pack that Smoka was carrying.
Smoka was detained for questioning and subsequently confessed to the crime, Howton said.
The suspect was lodged in the Caldwell County Jail.
Harper reported the crime to police Wednesday. She told officers responding to her home that at about 3:13 p.m. a man had come to her residence and asked for a drink of water. She related that she left the man at the door and went to get the water, but when she turned around, he was standing behind her.
Howton said that the man told Harper he had a gun and demanded money. However, she had a cellular phone in her hand and told the man she was calling the police.
That’s when the robbery attempt was thwarted and the man fled the residence running south on Cadiz Street.
• Police are probing the assault of a Varmint Trace man at 11:09 p.m. on Thursday. Howton said that the case was opened after officers were called to 708 Varmint Trace about an assault.
Assault victim Hollis W. Batchlor, 58, told police that he was in his yard when two hooded men approached and attacked him.
Batchlor told police that he fought the attackers off.
Howton said that the assault victim sustained what appeared to be knife wounds to both arms.
Batchlor was taken to Caldwell County Hospital, where he was treated and released for injuries sustained in the assault.
• Police were called to another knife-related incident Tuesday night in the 400 block of Cooper Circle.
When police investigated an out of control juvenile complaint at 22:34 p.m., a 15-year-old juvenile was taken into custody and charged with assault fourth degree (domestic violence).
Howton said officers at the scene reported that the juvenile had threatened to cut a relative’s throat and caused damage to some property with the knife.
The juvenile was released to a guardian pending a hearing on the charges.
• Dennis R. Hathaway, 43, Varmint Trace, was arrested at 5 p.m. Tuesday on charges of alcohol intoxication in a public place.
The arrest followed police response to a call from the 100 block of Baldwin Avenue about an intoxicated male subject who had attempted to assault the resident.
Hathaway was lodged in the county jail.
