To the Editor:
The morning of May 6, I hit a deep pothole on East Main in and about the intersection of Cadiz Street. I circled around to the City of Princeton’s offices and thought I would tell them so they could get it fixed before an accident occurred. As I was waiting at the desk, I chatted with a Princeton Police Officer.
When the city employee asked how she could help me I told her about the pothole problem and that it needed immediate attention lest it cause an accident. The officer joined in the observation and also told her that it was a hazard for he himself had seen the pothole was hazardous.
The response to the issue was “it’s not our responsibility.” She pointed out that technically the workmanship belongs to the Caldwell County Highway Department or the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Only after I indicated that “don’t worry about it, I’ll write an editorial about your indifference” did she then offer to call the county highway department.
What’s wrong with government? “It’s not our responsibility.” Well, when elections come, the public needs to demonstrate that it is their responsibility — that’s why they were elected.
