Relay for Life community support is sought

Saturday, May 19, 2007

To the Editor:

This is in response to the past few years at Relay For Life in our community. Every year the attendance and crowd gets smaller and smaller. Sure raising money to find a cure for this disease that has no limits is great, but what about love and support. It’s truly amazing how a cancer patient feels when they know people care about what they’re going through.

You may be saying I don’t have cancer or no one in my family does and if that’s the case consider yourself very blessed. There are no words to describe how devastated a person is when they hear the words “you have cancer.” A person who hears these words needs all the love and support they can get because it helps their attitude toward fighting this disease when they know people love and care about them.

It breaks my heart every year when you look in the stadium on the night of Relay For Life and there are so few people there to show love and support for those facing cancer or who have faced cancer. It is really sad when people can pack the Tiger Stadium to watch a football game but they can’t do it on such a meaningful night as the Relay For Life.

All I’m asking is for you to take one night of 365 nights of the year to come and show your love and support. Think about a person who has or has had cancer how many of their nights are affected with pain, nausea from their treatment.

I ask you to please search your heart and do the right thing and come show your love and support on June 8. I thank everyone who showed me love and support while I was going through cancer but most of all I thank “God” for bringing me through it for without him I wouldn’t be here today.
