Tigers, Lyons to play in annual Dreammaker Classic Saturday

The baseball teams from both Caldwell County and Lyon County will play in the annual Dreammaker Classic this Saturday in Murray.

This is third year for the Dreammaker Classic. The event is an opportunity for the high school baseball players to give back to their community by volunteering their talents on and off the field. The event is worked by the Murray High players. All proceeds from the gate and concession go to a designated charity. In 2006, the Dream Factory (Paducah) received $1,100 from the event. Last year, the American Cancer Society was given $1,250. This year's designated charity is Special Olympics.

Several teams have participated in all three years of the event — Caldwell, Lyon, Graves County, Ballard Memorial and Webster County.

Sponsors for the event are Primary Care and Community Financial Services Bank (CFSB). These two sponsors provide monetary support to offset the cost of the umpires. "This allows us to be able to give all of the profits to our chosen charity," noted Murray High head coach Mike Johnson, who played at Caldwell County and was also an assistant coach at that school, along with being the former head coach of the Princeton Post 116 American Legion team. "The Diamond Club also contributes to take care of any additional cost," he added.

"We are very excited about the opportunity to host this event each year. This gives our players an opportunity to provide monetary help for a charity while also allowing them to see the importance of community service.

"We are very fortunate to have several coaches in the area that continue to commit to play and help our event," said Johnson. "I think that shows that it not only is a community event but hopefully can grow into a regional event."

The schedule starts Saturday morning with Lyon County facing Ballard Memorial at 10 a.m. Graves County will play Louisville Seneca at 2:30 p.m., followed by Murray and Webster County at 4:45 p.m. The day's action concludes with Caldwell taking on Paducah St. Mary at 7 p.m.

"It has turned into such a great day of baseball and fun. We hope we have a big crowd to help the Special Olympics. Our goal is to go over $1,500 this year," said Johnson. "The weather has been good the last two years so I hope rain stay away this Saturday."
