Three Tigers saw a heavy dose of action in Friday night’s Senior All-Star Football Game in Murray, but the WKC squad suffered a 21-7 setback to their Southern Illinois counterparts.
Southern Illinois took a 13-0 lead to haltime thanks to a pair of scoring tosses.
But Western Kentucky tried to answer in the second half — a long touchdown run by Fulton City’s DaeRon Williams sparking the comeback bid.
Williams scampered 74 yards for a score midway through the third quarter. Mayfield’s Tommy McNutt kicked the extra point to make it 13-7 at the 5:25 mark of the period.
After a Southern Illinois punt, Williams appeared to strike again — this time taking a screen pass and turning it into a 74-yard scoring play. However, the WKC squad was penalized for a block in the back, negating the play that would have given Western Kentucky a chance to take the lead.
WKC coaches questioned the call while players on the sideline said two players fell down on the play, making it appear that a southern Illinois player had been clipped.
Instead of a touchdown, Western Kentucky had to punt, and never mounted a serious scoring threat the remainder of the night.
Dontrelle Black scored on a 26-yard run in the fourth quarter to help put the game away for the visitors, who now lead the all-star series 3-1. Southern Illinois then picked off a WKC pass and ran out the clock.
Caldwell’s Michael Lipson saw action on both sides of the ball for the Western Kentucky All-Stars, playing mostly defensive end. However, he lined up at receiver and in the backfield on offense and saw work on special teams.
The Tigers’ Matt Tittle made a pair of short catches and had a first down reception nullified by a penalty. He also saw time on special teams.
Caldwell’s Jake Pepper made a first down catch in the red zone in the first half while playing extensively at one of the receiver spots.
