Ty Rogers’ game-winning 3-point field goal at the buzzer in overtime that lifted the Western Kentucky University basketball program to an opening-round NCAA Tournament victory in March over then-No. 14 Drake has been nominated for an ESPY Award, it was announced on Tues­day.

The play, which resulted in a 101-99 win over the Bulldogs — the school’s first in the event since 1995 — allowed the Hilltoppers to advance to the second round to take on San Diego. They would go on to defeat the Toreros 72-63 to earn WKU’s first trip to the Sweet 16 since the 1993 tournament.

The shot is one of four nominees in the Best Finish category. Other candidates for the award are the final lap of the 2007 Pepsi 400, the overtime periods of game one of this spring’s Western Conference first-round NBA playoff series between the San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns, and the end of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ triple-overtime victory over the Detroit Red Wings in game five of the NHL’s Stanley Cup finals last month.

Voting in 37 categories will be conducted at ESPYs.tv through 10:59 p.m. Saturday, July 12. The ESPYs will air Sunday, July 20, on ESPN.
