The Tradewater Pirates have sewed up the KIT regular season baseball championship, completing a three-game sweep of Owensboro Saturday with a 4-0 triumph. The Pirates, now 32-13 on the year, own a six-game lead over Owensboro and Fulton going into the All-Star game break.

The Pirates, after a makeup game Tuesday, go to Fulton for a two-game road set beginning Wednesday, then close out the regular season with home games against Farmington on Friday and Saturday.

In Saturday’s game, George Hebert allowed only three hits and struck out nine in six innings of work and improves to 8-0 on the year.

Justin Long went 4-for-4 while Logan Bawcom drove in two runs while Will Cartwright and Matt Kulbacki each had run-scoring sacrifice flies for the Pirates.

Relievers Jon Moore and Eric Faint had no problems locking down the Oiler offense in relief.

The Pirates were errorless for the fourth game in a row, a club record.

On Friday night, Jon Lee came on in relief of middle man Payne Spence and closed out the Oilers 6-5. Don Pugliese got the first two Oilers he faced on Friday, establishing a new team record with 18 consecutive batters retired.

Pugliese ran into trouble early, however, and fell behind 3-0.

The Pirates chipped away at Oiler starter Ryan Harper, closing to 3-2, and then in the sixth, the Bucs chased Harper, taking a 6-3 lead. Sean Mahley had a base-clearing triple to add to Harper’s misery.

Schlegel season over

Tradewater catcher Kevin Schlegel, one of six Pirates named to the All-Star team, did not participate in Monday’s game because of a shoulder injury. With the regular season closing out next week, Schlegel has returned home to Oklahoma to rehabilitate his injury, ending his time with the Pirates.
