Caldwell County head coach David Barnes expects some surprises from Glasgow head coach Billy Lindsey this week. However, Barnes said he fully expects the Scotties to rely heavily on their ground attack when they visit Tiger Stadium Friday night for the Trice Hughes Chevrolet Bowl.
“From what we’ve seen on film they’re going to run the football,” said the CCHS skipper. “They can go big in their backfield with No. 32 and No. 31.”
That would be tailback Lamar Howard (6-foot, 220 pounds, senior) and fullback Blake Perkins (5-11, 240, senior) who are expected to carry much of the load for Glasgow. That duo combined for 1,600 yards and 17 touchdowns last year.
Perkins rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries in the Scotties’ 42-26 loss to Allen County-Scottsville on Saturday. Howard totaled 57 yards on 14 carries.
Barnes said the running attack of Glasgow provides a different challenge for his squad than Madisonville’s spread attack last week.
“The thing about preparing for Madisonville was they run same thing we do, so we got a lot of reps for our scout team because they knew the plays,” he noted. “The thing we couldn’t show was the speed of Madisonville.
“This week it’s more recognizing offensive sets and what they like to run out of those sets. But I know coach Lindsey. He could come in here and run something totally different Friday night, especially after they lost last week. And I know at some point they’ll try some trick stuff.”
Quarterback Tyler Lindsey (6-1, 190, senior) threw for over 700 yards and eight touchdowns last season. In Glasgow’s opener, he completed 7 of 11 passes for 148 yards and two scores.
“They like the sprint-out pass and play-action pass out of running sets,” said Barnes. “They’ll go twins some and throw out of that. Everything’s been under center — we haven’t seen them in the shotgun any.”
Tight end Jordan York (6-1, 185, senior) “catches the ball well,” said Barnes.
Wide receiver Stacy Sullivan (5-8, 170, senior) topped the Scotties last week with three catches for 99 yards and a touchdown.
Up front, Glasgow averages about 225 pounds across the offensive line. Right guard Breon Alexander (5-9, 245, senior) while center Andrew Boston (5-10, 235, junior) is the only non-senior starter on the offensive side of the football.
“The thing that concerns us is them putting together drives and eating six, seven, eight minutes off the clock,” said Barnes. “We have to do a much better job of tackling this week. We did a lot of arm tackling last week. Our pursuit was good, but we have to wrap people up.”
Glasgow, being a Class 2A school, doesn’t figure to have the depth of Madisonville, a 6A school, but the Scotties look to only have four players going both ways.
“Defensively, we’re expecting some 40 fronts, some 4-2 similar to what Madisonville played last week,” said Barnes. “We’ve also seen some 50 out of them. But we’ve practiced against almost every look we could possibly see.
“They like to bring some pressure with their outside backer. Their secondary is pretty good — they have good speed and cover well. Their inside linebackers are pretty quick and No. 19, one of their outside linebackers, causes some problems and is a good athlete.”
That would be John Allen (5-11, 206, senior), who also starts at split end on offense.
However, Barnes again points out that Glasgow could bring in an entirely new defensive game plan this week after last week’s disappointing loss.
“I know they were expecting to have a good team, and they are pretty good,” he noted. ‘But knowing Billy, he may try something different after things didn’t go well last week.”
Caldwell and Glasgow will play the late game of Friday’s bowl doubleheader. Crittenden County and Lone Oak, who both won their openers last week, will kick things off at 6 p.m., with the Tigers and Scotties expected to begin at around 8:30 p.m.
Extra points: Caldwell has played Glasgow just two times previously, losing both meetings in the playoffs. The Tigers lost at Glasgow 42-17 in 2000 and fell at home 27-20 in 2002. ... In last year’s Trice Hughes Chevrolet Bowl, Glasgow defeated Crittenden 49-6 while Lone Oak beat Caldwell 56-3. ... Plans are to continue the bowl twinbill. Barnes said Hopkins County Central has agreed to play next season. The Storm will face Crittenden in the bowl opener, since Caldwell will face Hopkins Central the previous week in the Browning Chevrolet Bowl. Barnes is still looking for an opponent for his team in the late game. ... The only Tiger player questionable for this week’s game is senior Eric Faughn, who left the Madisonville contest in the first half with a hand injury. Faughn’s status probably won’t be known until game time Friday.
