Planning efforts are under way for the 2009 Caldwell County Relay for Life.
Organizers of the all-night fund-raiser are hoping to match the success of this year’s event, which brought in nearly $100,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Caldwell County’s gross for the 2008 event, held June 13-14, was $99,591.60 — “just phenomenal for a county of this size,” said Susan Hurt, community representative for the American Cancer Society.
Hurt presided over the first planning meeting for the 2009 Relay Monday at the Caldwell County Extension Office.
A Trigg County native, Hurt is taking over in Caldwell County for Ellen Dunning, who was recently named the ACS area director in Paducah.
“Relay for Life is as much an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fund-raiser,” she said.
“Individuals who are willing to give their time and energy to this exciting event, as a volunteer or participant, have made a commitment to fight back against this disease and let the community know that you can beat cancer.”
The 2009 Relay will be held June 12-13 at Caldwell County High School.
Co-chairing the 2009 event are Jarrod Jackson and Molly Egbert.
“We are all very excited about their enthusiasm and dedication to the American Cancer Society and your community,” Hurt said.
The ACS is currently working on fund-raising goals for the event, including an overall goal, team goals and sponsorship goals.
A Relay kickoff event will be held Tuesday, Nov. 18.
