A Princeton native will perform in the inauguration ceremony at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday.
Gunnery Sgt. Hilary Hart will serve in the 56th Inauguration of the President of the United States on Jan. 20 as a member of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band.
This marks the Marine Band’s 53rd consecutive inaugural appearance, and it is the second for Hart.
In March 1801, the Marine Band performed for the inaugural of Thomas Jefferson and has performed for every Presidential inaugural since. An accomplished musician himself, Jefferson recognized the unique relationship between the band and the Chief Executive by giving the Marine Band the title, “The President’s Own.”
The Marine Band will provide music for the Inauguration swearing-in ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, lead the second division of the parade, and perform at various inaugural balls throughout Washington, D.C.
Hart joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in May 2003.
Gunnery Sergeant Hart began her musical training at age 11. Upon graduating in 1996 from Caldwell County High School in Princeton, she attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Urbana, Ill., where in 2000 she earned a bachelor’s degree in music.
In 2002, she earned a master’s degree in music from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and in 2008 she earned a doctorate of musical arts at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
Her horn instructors include Martin Hackleman of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., Peter Landgren of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Kazimierz Machala, formerly of the Sydney Symphony in Sydney, Australia.
Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” Hart performed with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra in Maryland, the New World Symphony in Miami, the Gettysburg Symphony in Pennsylvania, and the Richmond Symphony in Virginia.
GySgt Hart performs with the Marine Band, Marine Chamber Orchestra, and the Marine Chamber Ensembles at the White House, in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, and across the country during the band’s annual concert tour.

The Marine Band is America’s oldest professional musical organization. Founded in 1798, the band has performed for every U.S. President since John Adams.
