A rare slipup for Emma Talley at this week’s Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior in Ashland.
Kendall Martindale of Jefferson City, Tenn., came from three strokes back to win the Girls Division at 9-over-par 219, passing Talley who had led after both the first and second rounds.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior was a 54-hole medal play event held at Bellefonte Country Club. The field featured 90 boys and 30 girls, ages 12-18, from 20 states, Canada and Taiwan. The par-70 course was played at 5,627 yards in the Girls Division.
Martindale was seven strokes behind Talley on Wednesday after the Princeton phenom fired a 2-under-par 68 in the opening round. Refusing to give up, Martindale kept her game steady, chipping away at Talley’s lead over the course of the last two rounds.
“I gained four strokes back on Emma (Thursday) so I knew it could be done again,” Martindale said. “I got an eagle on No. 5 from 140 yards out. If you have a good hole on this course you put it in your pocket and save it for later. The front nine got me ahead of the other girls and I just kept it going on the back.”
Talley and Allison Emrey of Charlotte, N.C., tied for second at 11-over-par 221.
Talley held a five-stroke lead after her opening round 68, which saw her play steady all day with birdies on Nos. 4, 11, 14, and 18.
However, she began to lose ground on Thursday when she carded a 5-over 75.
“I was everywhere on the course, everything was a little off today,” Talley noted afterward. “I made a double bogey on No. 14 and doubles are hard to make up. I’ve played well the last four weeks now and hopefully I can stay on that train.”
However, Talley came back on Friday and shot 8-over 78, allowing Martindale to pass her with a final round 73.
