Red Cross accepting donations for Haiti earthquake victims

The Mid-Western Kentucky Chapter of the American Red Cross has received $21,413 in donations through its offices in Christian, Caldwell, Hopkins, Muhlenberg, Todd and Trigg counties, with more people stopping by to make donations daily.

The office began receiving enquiries about fund-raising efforts and monetary donations as early as the day after the disaster.

Executive Director Jeanie Barnett is eager to express her thanks to the community saying, “It is truly touching that the people we serve here in our area are doing so much to support the Red Cross’ work in Haiti. It is wonderful that this community has such a strong desire to give assistance to the victims and to aid our efforts.”

When asked about non-monetary donations Jeanie stated that, “The Red Cross likes to purchase items as close to the disaster site as possible, as this allows them to receive supplies much faster than if they are gathered and sent. It also permits us to more accurately fulfill the most current needs on the scene. As a result, we are only accepting monetary donations at this time.”

Red Cross leaders are currently working with the U.S. government to get the much-needed supplies into the hands of the Haitian people.

Despite bottlenecks caused by the destruction of infrastructure, supplies are coming through, with more than 32 flights carrying Red Cross Aid landing in Haiti so far, and more planes and trucks carrying humanitarian assistance arriving daily.

Anyone wishing to make a donation is encouraged to write, call or stop by their local office or representatives. The Mid-West Chapter office is located at 124 N. Scott St., Madisonville, and can be reached at 270-821-6784 or www.mid-westkentcky.redcross.com.
