7th District draw sets tourney pairings

Both Caldwell County teams will play on Tuesday, Feb. 23, in the semifinals of the 7th District basketball tournaments at Hopkins County Central High School in Mortons Gap.

Caldwell’s girls have drawn Dawson Springs while Caldwell’s boys will play Hopkins Central.

A blind draw was held Wednesday afternoon at Hopkins Central to determine the pairings.

Action gets under way on Monday, Feb. 22.

The girls game at 6 p.m. that night has Madisonville-North Hopkins facing Hopkins Central.

The boys game at approximately 7:45 will see Madisonville play Dawson Springs.

On Tuesday, Feb. 23, Caldwell’s girls take on Dawson at 6, while Caldwell’s boys face Hopkins Central at around 7:45.

Both championship games will be played Thursday, Feb. 25, with the girls game at 6 and the boys game at approximately 7:45.

Admission is $5.

District champions and runners-up advance to regional play. The boys regional will be at Madisonville-North Hopkins with the girls 2nd Region tournament at Webster County.

Madisonville is the favorite in the girls 7th District tournament while Caldwell’s girls will be big favorites against Dawson.

In the boys district tourney, Madisonville is the favorite, with Hopkins Central expected to meet the Maroons in the finals.

Caldwell’s girls are seeking their first 7th District title in five tries. The Lady Tigers won 15 straight 5th District championships before being moved to the 7th District in 2005.

The Lady Tigers have only played in the 7th District finals once, bowing to Madisonville 57-46 last season.

Caldwell’s girls went on to reach the regional semifinals before falling to eventual champion Henderson County 82-43.

The previous three years, Caldwell lost to Hopkins Central in the district semifinals.

Meanwhile, Caldwell’s boys have one 7th District championship under their belts, beating Madisonville 88-75 for the 2007 title.

The Tigers went on to reach the regional semifinals that season before falling to Henderson County 79-69. Caldwell finished the year with a 23-4 record.

However, the Tigers lost in the district semifinals in its other three 7th District appearances, each time bowing to Madisonville.
