County school board members have selected the firm of Clark and Associates Architects to handle the design of a major renovation project at Caldwell County High School.
The project will involve replacing the school’s roof and will likely extend to a renovation of the facility’s heating and cooling systems and some electrical work.
“I would love to see it come to be,” Superintendent Carrell Boyd told the board Monday. “I do have concerns with projecting ahead this far.”
The new roof is essential, he said. Tackling the HVAC system at the same time, he added, would be in the board’s best interest, to avoid disturbing the new roofing membrane later.
The board, he said, has also discussed the possibility of a complete interior renovation at the school, the oldest of the four schools on the district’s Marion Road campus.
The school board is budgeting up to $9 million for the project.
Boyd said he had asked representatives from the Hilliard Lyons financial firm to speak to the board regarding bond payments and financing options.
Two firms, Clark and Associates Architects and Castleberry McGregor Swinford Architects, submitted letters of interest in the project.
Clark’s proposal offered architectural services at a fee of 5 percent of the project’s cost, while CMS offered services at a 7 percent fee.
“I feel like I have to recommend Clark and Associates to you for this reason,” Boyd said.
With a $9 million project, the 2 percent difference could amount to $180,000 in savings for the district, he noted.
Facilities Director Larry Curling recommended the 5 percent figure be included in the contract.
Boyd said he had had discussions with Clark architects to make sure no other fees were included in the quote.
“We certainly would like to get all those intangibles lined up.”
The board voted unanimously to hire Clark and Associates.
