The Lady Tiger volleyball team went 5-1 over the weekend in Lexington, reaching the championship flight of the Bluegrass State Games before falling to eventual champion Louisville Male in the quarterfinal round.

The BGSG event features double-pool play, with teams then seeded into one of eight single-elimination tournaments to finish the competition.

Caldwell finished tied for fifth in the championship flight out of 68 teams in the Games.

The Lady Tigers won their initial pool on Friday by beating Bishop Brossart 21-16, 21-10. Caldwell then outlasted John Hardin in three sets, 17-21, 21-9, 15-13 to win the pool.

As a pool winner, Caldwell was paired with other pool winners in the second round of pool play.

The Lady Tigers then started play on Saturday morning by beating Elizabethtown 21-10, 21-11. Caldwell then dispatched Bullitt East 21-14, 22-20 before edging Taylor County in three sets, 19-21, 21-14, 15-12.

At 5-0 overall and winner of its second pool, Caldwell was placed in the championship flight for Sunday’s action. The Lady Tigers drew a first-round bye, putting them into the quarterfinal round against the winner of Male and McCracken County.

That ended up being Male, which defeated the Lady Tigers 21-10, 21-14.

The Bluegrass State Games is a preseason tournament for high school teams in Kentucky. The regular season begins for Caldwell on Thursday when the Lady Tigers host Marshall County at the CAB gym.
