The Caldwell County Trail of Tears Commission hosted a program late last month at Caldwell County Elementary School in honor of Native American Heritage Month.
Commission members set up stations to educate students on their culture and traditions. They were able to see Native American artifacts, watch corn get grinded into corn meal, learn songs, dances and play games.
Commission member Linda Johnson-Higgins said it's important to teach children about Native American culture, and the commission tries to conduct the elementary school program annually.
"The Trail of Tears Commission sees the importance of honoring our ancestors, and by coming to schools and interacting with kids like this, we may plant a seed of interest in their minds," she said.
