Calling all civics-minded middle school students. The submission window is officially open for the National Civics Bee.
The competition is open to any Kentucky student in grades sixth, seventh and eighth. The Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the local competition. The submission window opened on Friday, Jan. 13 and will close Feb. 24 at 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time.
The contest exists in three phases. The first phase is an essay contest in which students submit a 500-word essay in response to the prompt provided by the National Civics Bee. This year’s prompt focuses on how students can make a difference in their own community.
“The evidence is clear: informed and active citizens make for a strong country, a strong economy and a strong workforce,” said Carolyn Cawley, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. “Our continued prosperity depends on the strength of all three, and so does the long-term health of America’s economy.”
After the essay competition, judges will select the top 20 finalists to participate in the local competition: a live quiz event that tests civic knowledge. Each finalist will receive a certificate, and the top three places will receive a cash prize. Third place will receive a $125 prize, second place will receive $250 and first place will receive $500. These top three also advance to state competition.
The state finalists will then compete again in a live quiz, where first, second and third place will be awarded. Finalists who participate in the State Civics Bee Competition will receive a trophy commemorating participation. Third place will receive $500, second place will receive $750 and first place will receive $1,000. These top three places will also receive their own separate trophies.
