Owen Matthews, 10, of Eddyville is battling cancer, and a fundraiser will be held today at Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville to help raise money for his fight.

A fundraiser last week for an area boy battling cancer exceeded its goal of $10,000, and an all-day benefit today at Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville will further help Lyon County’s Owen Matthews, 10, in his fight against a rare and aggressive form of the disease.

The Owen Tough Benefit will feature baseball and softball for youth, an evening adult softball tournament, a corn hole tournament and more. All proceeds will help the Matthews family with medical bills and related expenses.

Matthews is recovering from an extensive surgery last week Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. His parents, Chase and Jennifer Matthews, have documented the boy’s nearly year-long fight with cancer on the family’s Facebook page.

Today’s event has been organized by Lafe Riggs of Eddyville, a family friend.

A gate fee will be taken up to enter the park for the fundraiser. There will also be a donation jug set up for people who simply want to help out but cannot stay for the activities.

The day will feature both 8U softball and baseball in the morning across three fields. The T-ball field will be set up for a Wiffle ball home run derby. And a corn hole tournament is planned. At night, beginning around 6 or 7 p.m., a slow-pitch softball tournament will begin. Full concessions will be available all day.
