Kentucky State Police Post 2 of Madisonville announced that Derek Smith was promoted to the rank of captain Tuesday.
A native of Marshall County, Smith will serve as the commander of the post, which covers Caldwell, Christian, Crittenden, Hopkins, Muhlenberg and Todd counties.
Smith succeeds David Archer, who began his service as post commander in September 2019. Archer will be the commander at KSP Post 1 in Hickory in Graves County.
A 15-year veteran, Smith began his career with the Kentucky State Police in 2005 as a member of Cadet Class 84. In 2012, he was promoted to sergeant and served at Post 5 in Campbellsburg, Post 2 in Madisonville and Post 1 in Hickory.
In 2017, he was promoted to lieutenant and was assigned to the Madisonville post. He served as the criminal investigations lieutenant at Post 2 until his promotion to captain.
