"And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords." -- Ezekiel 38: 4
Ezekiel tells us in chapters 38 and 39 about a war that will take place in the future. It is called the War of Gog and Magog. This will be an attack on Israel by the forces of several Islamic nations and Russia.
Because such an enormous number of scriptural prophesies have already been fulfilled, we can conclusively state, this war will happen. It is not a matter of if, but when.
It appears the final war will be fought on Mt. Megiddo and in the valley of Jezreel. This war and place is also called Armageddon (Revelation 16: 16) and will be fought after the rapture, during the Tribulation. John describes the blood as being a depth to a horses bridle (Revelation 14: 20).
John in Revelation 9:16 speaks of an army of 200 thousand, thousand (200 million). We now know China and possibly North Korea have the ability to amass such an army.
Also, the possibility exists for an Islamic army of 200 million to exist very soon. The number of Muslims in the world is rapidly approaching two billion. If eight or nine percent of that number are militarized, that is nearly 200 million. Add to that a few hundred thousand Russian soldiers, and the number easily becomes a reality.
Many believe when the war of Gog and Magog takes place, the world will turn against Israel. This includes the U.S. Only the Trump administration has shown support of Israel, while the previous four presidents have shown support in word only. Once the Trump presidency ends, that situation will likely return.
We have seen in scripture how God orchestrates events and situations that ultimately allow Him to demonstrate who He is. Expelling the Midianites and Amalekites from Israel in Judges 7 is such a case. The parting of the Red Sea and delivering the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt is another (Exodus 14:21-31).
The world stage is now being set for another demonstration of His power. That demonstration will be one equal to or even greater than the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19: 23). The current geo-political landscape is indicative of this developing scenario.
Ezekiel 38: 5-6, tells us the armies of the north (Rosh) Russia, will combine with Persia (Iran) and Libya (probably a conglomeration of several Arabic countries) to attack Israel. Israel is much more powerful than all of them combined but they don't know it. Israel has the power of the Creator of the universe on their side.
The U.S will verbally condemn the assault against Israel. However, the government, possibly then controlled by a weaker president, will do nothing to actually militarily defend Israel.
The question by some may be, "What could Russia possibly want with Israel?" The answer is twofold. First, geologists believe there are vast petroleum reserves under Israel. That oil is the "hooks in the jaws" (38:4) Ezekiel referred to. Russia, in order to regain their place as the world super power, needs that oil.
The machinery of war runs on oil. Petroleum has become the Achilles heel of America and most of the rest of the world. If OPEC cuts off the oil supply to the western world, we would be propelled back to the stone age in less than a week. This is another reason America must explore and drill those vast reserves under our own country.
The Islamic goal is to conquer the world for Allah. To cripple America and the rest of the western world is an achievable pursuit and fully possible if they can control the entire Middle East. The conquering of the world will not take place by only terrorism. The methods of war are numerous; political, economic, and reproduction practices are methods of imperialistic pursuits in today's world.
There is a second reason Russia wants Israel. Look at a map of the Eastern Hemisphere. Israel's geographic location is strategic for a world power. Russia wants Israel for its centralized location for a seaport for their massive naval operations.
Russia, based on current intelligence and news reports, has become allied with Iran and several other Arabic countries. A common goal of those countries is to destroy Israel and America. Russia serves a purpose for those countries. That purpose is, of course, military might, but also the rest of the world will fear the Russian war machine and be fearful of siding with Israel.
Russia, of course, not only covets Israel's oil but also wants control of the world's major supplier, OPEC. By controlling that greater part of the world oil supply, they believe they can rule the world. If it were not for the intervention of the Creator, Jehovah God, that would be correct.
Once these massive armies of invaders become a reality, the plan will be initiated. Ezekiel told us 2700 years ago, Israel would be attacked (Ezekiel 38: 11) in a time of assumed peace.
The war of Gog and Magog in Ezekiel 38 may be the same as Armageddon in Revelation 16 but not likely. Personally, I believe the war of Gog and Magog will come before the rapture and Armageddon after. I really hope the first war happens in my lifetime because I would like to see Philippians 2: 10-11 come to pass, "that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord"
The war of Gog and Magog will be bloody. Ezekiel tells of the massive bloodshed and the tremendous loss of life on the attackers. God will kill 5/6 of the invading armies (Ezekiel 39: 2). He will cause the enemy forces to turn on each other. It will be the greatest example of death by "friendly fire" in history.
Jehovah God will cause hailstones, fire and brimstone to fall on Magog's homeland (39:6). That 1/6 surviving the war will have no home to return to.
This prophesy could come to pass in our lifetime. Current actions and events in the world and especially the Middle East indicate God's plan is moving right along. Our security is in knowing what is happening and why. God is in control and His plan is coming together.
In is a foregone conclusion, we know who will win in the end. Israel will, of course, be victorious, and the church, the believer followers of Lord Jesus. This doesn't mean it's going to be pretty or easy. But it will happen. God will reign!
