Countering the modern criticisms on family
In the 1800s, Marx and Engels in the Communist Manifesto advocated the abolition of the family. Their ideology lives on today. The Marxist organization Black Lives Matter works “to disrupt the nuclear family structure,” and our institutions of higher education have joined the cause.
Bethany Letiecq, an associate professor in the Human Development and Family Science program at George Mason University, argued in an interview last year with the liberal think tank Family Story, that marriage “was designed by white, heterosexual men to maintain their power and social-economic dominance and control.”
She denounced what she described as “family privilege,” where biblical family structure results in “unearned” and, in her view, unjust advantages. “Marriage,” she claimed, “has long been used as a wedge demarcating the privileged halves … from the socially-determined have-nots.”
Singing a different verse of the same song, Dr. Sophie Lewis, a visiting scholar at The Alice Paul Center for Research on Gender, Sexuality and Women at the University of Pennsylvania, and a member of the teaching faculty of the Philadelphia branch of the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research, publicly pledged her support for “family abolition.”
In an article entitled, “Want to Dismantle Capitalism? Abolish the Family,” published at The Nation last year, she said, “Mothers nurture, but they also kill and abuse their wards. That’s why it’s so valuable to denaturalize the mother-child bond. … Children should belong to no one but themselves.”
Playing the race card, Lewis praised “polymaternalism” in some circles of the Black community and alleged, “it was the invention of the ‘natural’ private family household that entrenched the disposability of Black life in America.”
The traditional family was not “designed” or “invented” by mankind. God established the family in the Old Testament (Gen. 1:27-28 & 2:24), and affirmed it in the New (Mat. 19:4-6). Children are a blessing from God (Ps. 127:3-5), the responsibility of parents to train and especially fathers to “bring up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Deut. 6:7 & Eph. 6:4).
Stay strong families of Caldwell and Lyon counties. Satan seeks to devour our families. He is crouching at the door with misinformation, temptation, and peer pressure. But, greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.
