Mayor Kota Young's announcement this week of a "Day of Service" in the community next Saturday, April 27, should spur all of us who call Princeton and Caldwell County home to do something in return for the community we love.

A number of local organizations are already on board with the idea of pitching in to give the community a spring spruce-up by picking up trash in public areas, pulling weeds and tackling other projects.

Readers may be aware of the TrashTag Challenge that has drawn participation worldwide, in which ordinary citizens and groups take it upon themselves to clean up a section of their own communities and sharing those efforts on social media.

Such efforts -- good for the earth and good for the communities involved -- are laudable, and it is our hope that the Day of Service draws a crowd to make the city a little cleaner, and to make our community spirit a little brighter.
