The Crittenden County Rockets routed the Caldwell County Tigers in the quarterfinal round of the Second Region All “A” Classic Tuesday night, Jan. 10 with a final score of 63-44.
The Tigers have been plagued with a host of injuries since the season’s start. Short two starters, Caldwell County struggled to find a groove amongst the new starting five. Crittenden County took advantage of the opportunity, putting up nine straight to convert Caldwell County’s opening 5-2 lead to a 9-5 Rocket advantage. Travis Champion turned a stolen possession into a breakaway basket to push the lead out to 11-5. Xavier Bumphus’ three cut the lead back 13-9 with just over a minute in the first frame, but Preston Morgeson answered back with a jumper just inside the arc to put the Rockets up 15-9.
By halftime, the Rockets had doubled Caldwell County 32-16, limiting the Tigers to just seven points in the second quarter. Being short on rebounds plus full court pressure from the Rockets, kept the Tigers scoring in single digits in the third quarter as well.
Crittenden County poured in 17 more points for a 44-25 cushion. Morgeson, who led the Rockets with 26 points, was 5-for-6 in two-point field goals and 5-for-9 in three-point range. Crittenden County finished 18-for-32 from the field and 7-for-17 on 3-pointers.
The Tigers found a rhythm in the final frame out-shooting Crittenden County 19-15, but the early lead Crittenden County built would withstand the final eight minutes.
Bumphus hit double digits for the Tigers with 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Carter Whittington added nine points, three steals and two assists while Demaurius Thompson and Jack Roach both had six. Thompson also pulled down five rebounds.
Besides Morgeson, Champion also hit double figures for the Rockets, adding 18 points and nine rebounds.
The Tigers slipped to 3-10 after dropping two straight. Caldwell County will host Seventh District rival Hopkins County Central on Thursday. After Crittenden County’s bid at a trip to the All “A” Classic in Richmond ended unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 14 in a 68-34 loss to University Heights Academy, the Rockets return to their regular season schedule, traveling to Livingston on Friday.
