The Lady Lyons looked to get back to .500 as the playoffs approach, but fell to Paducah Tilghman on Tuesday in Eddyville by a score of 4-1 on senior night in their final home match. Lyon County lost their fifth straight, and their eighth in nine games. They've scored just 15 goals in their last 11 games after having 27 goals in their first five matches of the season.
Lyon County got their only goal from Mary Davis as she tied it 1-1 just 10 minutes in, before Tilghman had the final three goals of the game to win their fifth straight. Abby Smith had 11 saves in the match against Tilghman, and Olivia Ladd, Abi Worth, Shelby Nickal and Kiersa Antip scored the goals for the Lady Blue Tornado.
"I've known all five of those girls since they were little, because I teach at the elementary school," head coach Abby Smith said. "I had all five of those girls for science and they still sing the songs that we sang back in elementary school together at the practices with me. We see each other off of the field and our families are friends in this small community like this. They just have the best attitude. You say every year that it's hard to replace, and those five stepped up. We thought it would be tough to replace last year, but those girls stepped up and I have confidence that my next five are going to step up as well. I'm so proud of how they go around during the school day encouraging each other and inviting people to do things with them outside of school, that makes a big difference."
The struggles continued for Lyon County (6-11) on Thursday in a 5-2 loss to a much improved St. Mary team, falling in their sixth straight game after a 4-1 start to the 2019 season.
Rose Smith scored both the Lady Lyon goals, and Sydney Hoffman came up with the only assist. Abby Smith finished with 10 saves in the goal as the Lady Lyons got off 12 shots.
Lyon County has lost four straight on the road.
Smith now has 31 goals on the season, and St. Mary (6-9) got their third straight win.
Lyon County can end the streak with a match at Mayfield on Monday at 7 p.m. in a rematch from August 23 when the Lady Lyons won 7-2.
