The Hopkins County Central Lady Storm remains undefeated in the Seventh District as well as the Second Region as they breezed to a 65-44 win over the Caldwell County Lady Tigers on Thursday night, Jan. 19 in Princeton.
Caldwell County’s AJ Hollowell led all scorers with 22 points. Hollowell was 5-for-7 from 3-point range with all but one of those three’s coming in the fourth quarter during Caldwell’s attempt at a late rally.
Just four minutes into the contest, Hopkins Central had built a double-digit lead. With just a minute left in the first frame, Hopkins Central had extended that lead 19-5, but baskets by Hollowell and Med Thomas cut the lead back 19-9. Full court pressure from Thomas forced a Hopkins Central turnover in the final seconds, giving Caldwell County a second look at cutting the deficit to single digits, but the last second basket was no good.
Hopkins Central led by as much as 15, 29-14, in the second quarter, but Hollowell’s back-to-back possessions — thanks to a trap and a block from KeDarriah Thompson and Thomas, cut the Lady Storm’s lead once again at 29-19.
Caldwell’s defensive pressure limited Hopkins Central to just 13 points in the third quarter. Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, a few free throws and a last second basket from Tink Clark would be all that Caldwell would get through the net, allowing the Lady Storm’s lead to swell to nearly 20 points, 42-25.
Hollowell exploded in the quarter with 14 points, but Hopkins Central’s Calajia Mason and Tyah White combined for 18 points in the final frame to offset all Hollowell’s hard work. Hopkins Central led by as much as 23 late in the contest.
Brooklyn Clark topped the Lady Storm with 17 points. Three others were in double figures. White added 13 points, while Emile Jones finished with 12 and Mason had 10.
Thomas was the only other Lady Tiger in double figures. She shot 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Clark and Jakhia Copeland led Caldwell’s rebounding efforts with eight each. Clark also had seven points, while shooting 3-for-4 from the line.
