The Hopkins County Central Lady Storm are still favored for the No. 1 seed in the Seventh District tournament with the Monday, Feb. 6 win by 58-37 over the Caldwell County Lady Tigers.
A balanced effort from AJ Hollowell, Presley McKinney and Nyla Sikes kept the first quarter close. A late bucket from Tyah White gave the Storm the 13-11 advantage at the close of the first frame. The Lady Storm broke loose with a 9-0 run in the second quarter from Brooklyn Clark and Mercy Sutton to take the 22-11 lead. Caldwell scored just two back-to-back baskets from Sikes and Tink Clark to trim the margin 22-15, but a last second shot from Emile Jones gave Hopkins Central back a double-digit lead at 25-15 heading into halftime.
Back-to-back threes from Medeline Thomas put Caldwell as close as six, 27-21, early in the third quarter. Jones answered back with a three to extend Hopkins Central’s lead back to nine. Thomas brought the Lady Tigers back within six once again, 30-24, with another shot from beyond the arc with 5:23 still to play in the third. But almost as quick as it started, Caldwell’s surge was stalled by a 15-0 run from Hopkins Central. Hollowell and McKinney each knocked down one of two free throws in the final seconds of the quarter to cut the Lady Storm’s advantage 45-26.
Despite a valiant effort in the fourth quarter from the Lady Tigers, the lead the Lady Storm built in the third quarter would be too big to overcome.
Thomas finished the night with 12 points, shooting 4-for-9 from three-point range to lead the Lady Tigers. Hollowell also hit double figures with 10 points and nine rebounds. KeDarriah Thompson led Caldwell in rebounding with 12 boards and picked up two points to boot.
Hopkins Central had four players in double figures. Sutton led the way with 15 points, followed by Jones with 13, Clark with 11 and Lillie Whitaker-Greer had 10.
