Storm drop Caldwell in soccer district semifinals

The Caldwell County Lady Tigers soccer team reached the end of their 2021 soccer season in a 2-1 loss against Hopkins Central in the semifinal round of the 7th District tournament last Monday.

The score was nil for both teams until after halftime.

Just 3 minutes into the second half a foul in the box gave Hopkins Central a penalty kick.

Priya Holmes slid one just inside the left goal post.

Caldwell goalie Rachel McClung got a couple of fingers on it, but it rolled to the back of the net.

The Storm led 1-0 until around the 70-minute mark when once again a handball in the box set the Lady Tigers up to even the score.

Laken White’s high ball evened things 1-1.

The 1-1 tie sent the game into two 5-minute overtimes.

With the teams still in a deadlock, it all came down to penalty kicks.

White put the Tigers ahead with the first shot being good, but Hopkins Central goalie Kire Peyton saved the next three Lady Tigers shots.

Meanwhile, Hopkins Central had two misses and one kick saved until Ashdyn Dugger sank hers.

Harper Ritchey was the last to shoot for the Lady Tigers and hers was deflected by Peyton, leaving the game in the hands of Holmes.

In a photo finish Holmes’ precision between the left goal post and McClung’s long stretch decided the game.

McClung had five saves for the night added to a season total of 68.

White and Kendall ended the season tied for leading scorer with each having five goals.

White also collected three assists, while Boyd had one for the season.

The Lady Tigers closed the season 7-13.

Hopkins Central will face returning 7th District champion Madisonville North Hopkins in the finals.

Both teams will advance to regional bracket play.
