Down two starters, Caldwell County’s girls found themselves in a bit of a hole in the first half Saturday that even a 15-7 rally in the third quarter couldn’t overcome.
The Lady Tigers (3-5) got 10 points from Parris Gray and eight from Katy Smiley, but host Mayfield was led by a hot-handed Halie Duke, who tied a team record with seven 3-pointers for a single game and led both teams with 23 points for a 65-44 win for the Lady Cardinals (8-3).
Mayfield used its half-court defense for 22 transition points in the first half for a 40-15 lead and controlled the boards throughout the game.
Caldwell got a spark in the third frame behind five of Smiley’s eight points and a 3-pointer off Morgan McDaniels, while holding the Lady Cardinals to just seven points to pull within 47-30.
But minus leading scorers Jacey Jaggers and Majah Hollowell, it was a tall hill for the Lady Tigers to overtake.
Caldwell County head coach Chuck Mitchell said his team was trying to get in sync without Jaggers and Hollowell and made some adjustments at halftime.
“We told the girls we were going to attack the rim and not get trapped, and it started working out for us,” he said. “We made a little run and it made us feel better with what we were doing.
“(Jaggers and Hollowell) will be back Tuesday (to play Lyon County) but we missed them tonight. At the same time, we’ve got a lot of young kids who got to play, and I was really proud of them.”
Despite the loss, Mitchell said he feels the team is building momentum as they get deeper into the season.
“These experiences are getting us better from the neck up,” Mitchell said. “From the neck down, we’re a good basketball team. From the neck up, we’re learning how to deal with adversity and, come Tuesday, we’ll be a buzzsaw.”
