Junior Jabrions Spikes went 13-for-18 from the free-throw line — 6-for-8 in the fourth quarter alone — to help propel Caldwell County past host Crittenden County 55-54 on Friday.

Spikes’ last free throw was the nail in the Rockets’ coffin, making the difference with 2.7 seconds left in regulation.

The Tigers (3-7) snapped a five-game skid with the win and faced regional rival Lyon County in Eddyville Tuesday night, the third meeting between the teams this season.

Caldwell County used a strong offense in the second period to gain an advantage, scoring 21 points in that quarter to take a 35-26 halftime advantage.

Crittenden County (5-4) narrowed that gap to a 45-42 Tiger lead after three quarters and outscored Caldwell County 12-10 in the final frame, but were unable to get past the Tigers.

“It was a tough game,” said Caldwell head coach Daniel Kukahiko. “Crittenden is a solid basketball team. Our guys did a lot of really good things in that game, starting with making some big shots.

“Defensively, we played pretty well all night except for about a three- to four-minute stretch which allowed them to make a run against us. Overall, I’m proud of this team’s effort and willingness to keep grinding in the midst of adversity.”

Spikes led all scorers with 23 points, while senior Tripp Branch put in 10, with eight of those points coming in the first half. Senior Tate VanHooser added seven points, while junior Zavy Bumphus and eighth-grader Collin Whittington each scored six points and freshman Carter Whittington had three.

Gabe Mott paced the Rockets with 21 points, while Preston Turley had 12, Preston Morgeson had 10, Tyler Boone had nine points and Travis Champion added two.

Caldwell County visits District 7 rival Madisonville-North Hopkins for a 7:30 p.m. Friday game, then travels to Muhlenberg County for a 6:30 p.m. Saturday matchup.
