The Seventh District baseball championship was a pitchers duel that ended with Madisonville-North Hopkins upsetting Caldwell 1-0 to claim the title for the first time since 2019, Tuesday night in Princeton.
Eric Farmer and Ben Goodaker were well matched as Goodaker allowed just four hits while Farmer allowed three. Farmer threw 88 pitches with a total of 52 strikes while Goodaker threw 87 pitches with a total of 57 strikes. Farmer struck out seven and walked three while Goodaker got the upper hand striking out eight and walked none.
With the two aces on the mounds, hitting was not consistent for either teams leaving runners stranded most innings.
The near double shutout shifted into the Maroons favor when a lead off single from Ryder Sandidge was followed by a batter hit by pitch giving the Maroons two base runners with no outs. Tomas Olivera followed up with a sacrifice bunt to move Sandidge to third with no force out available. A ground out to second from Tanner Bess still meant a run scored for the Maroons and the 1-0 win.
Goodaker went 2-for-3 for Caldwell and was the only player in the game with multiple hits.
