Tigers silence Hopkins Central Storm

Christian Jones prepares to move the ball upfield against the Hopkins Central Storm last Thursday. The Tigers would win the match 3-0 to pick up their seventh district win of the season.

Late goals from Weston Phelps and Ethan Witherspoon helped the Caldwell County Tigers pick up their third win of the season last Tuesday. The Tigers’ much-needed 3-0 win over Hopkins Central comes after a six-game losing streak.

The 7th district win moves Caldwell to the 5th overall position in Region 2. With this loss, Hopkins Central was bumped to 6th overall.

The Storm outshot the Tigers 8-3 in the first half but neither team managed to score.

More than 11 minutes went by with very little action happening near the goals until a pass from Deacon Carter to Weston Phelps waiting near the center of the goal. Phelps’ hard kick to the left corner, past Storm goalie Trevor Weldon, made it a 1-0 ball game.

Phelps was back in goal about eight minutes later on a pass from Chase Lantrip, giving the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. Ethan Witherspoon took the long haul from near center field to score the Tigers’ final shot of the night for the 3-0 win.

Blake Vivrette stood in for Caldwell goalkeeper Corbin Nichols. Vivrette had 11 saves.
